Alter Real ... “Real”ly a great day!

The annual Alter Real Stud auction was great!

More than an auction it works as a first class meeting point for riders and horse people from all over the country and also from abroad.

The beautiful Stud that also hosts the National Equestrian School headquarters and its beautiful surroundings are perfect scenery and the main arena staged the event and provides comfortable accommodation to the hundreds of visitors.

Before the auction there was a riding demonstration of the equestrian ability of two other Portuguese horse breeds: the Garrano and the Sorraia, and also a superb Dressage performance at GP level of the Alter Real stallion Rubi ridden by Gonçalo Carvalho (EPAE).

The Garrano´s performed beautifully at Driving, and the Sorraia´s performed at basic level Dressage and Show Jumping.

Here are some images from the Dressage demonstrations from "Rubi". The Piaffe is impressive!

At 03 p.m. the auction started.

There were 18 mares and 35 horses, and the sale started with the mares. The prices started at 1500€ or 2000€

The mare “Suiça” by “Isquemio” and “Jaxila” by “Xaquiro”, with a foal by “Rubi” reached the highest price – 15100€

The auction higher price, 15600€, was reached by the horse “Xuhado” a black stallion, by “Hircino” and “Ohufa” by “Hircino”.

Here are some more pictures from the Alter Real Stud and the Auction. Hope you like it!

Hi Emma!

The grey horses are Sorraia, an ancient breed. They are pony size and are being tested as saddle horses now. They are really lovely.

They also perform in a long reins act on the "Academie du Spetacle Equestre" at Versailles, Paris.

If you ever decide coming to Portugal, i´ll be glad to help you! :)

Best wishes

Hello! I have a grey mare that is presumably an Alter-real but I can't find out much about her past. She is branded with the letters AR inside of a crown. Do you by any chance know what the Alter Real's brand looks like? Is there only one or are there variations on the same theme? Thanks for any info you can give me! Amy

Hi Amy!

The typical Alter Real Lusitano Horse is Bay, like those you can see in the post pictures. However there is notice of some horses born with different colors, like grey. The fire brand you describe in your mare sounds like the Alter Real.

It is possible to check the Lusitano Horse Stud-book (that includes the Alter Real horses) to check if she is registered, when she was born, graded and who are their parents.

If you wish you can e-mail me a picture of your mare and her original name, and I'll try to find somehting more about her!
