The Lusitano horse greatest event

Tomorrow begins the “Feira da Golegã” - Golegã Fair, the oldest and most important event centred on the Portuguese national horse breed, the Lusitano. Is an annual Fair that takes place in a little village called Golegã in the heart of the most traditional horse breeding region - the Ribatejo.

In this event we get the chance to see the year selection of the products of all Portuguese main breeders, and watch the Lusitano horse perform in the main equestrian disciplines, like Dressage, Driving, and Working Equitation and also in the Portuguese traditional riding contests.

Is also an important gathering moment to riders and horse lovers. Coming from all over the country and abroad with their horses to show them off in the “manga” (a kind of cat-walk for horses around the village central square) and to taste the season’s special foods “Água-pé” (the year’s new wine) and “castanhas assadas” (baked Chestnuts).

Unfortunately every year there are unhappy incidents regarding the horse’s welfare due to some riders and crowd irresponsible behaviours. But despite this, the Golegã Fair is truly a magical and emotive moment where the beauty and nobleness of the Lusitano horse is taken to its highest level.

To mark this special event the cartoon on the right corner of the Blog will be a female rider and horse in the Portuguese typical tack and riding costume which is the required outfit to show the horse in the “manga”.

This year’s poster.
